KGLP's New Manager Brings New Ideas for Connecting with Gallup Listeners

GALLUP -- KGLP, Gallup's public radio station, has a new manager. Rachel Kaub

joined the station in January, after eight years as operations manager at KUNM

in Albuquerque.

Kaub brings some new ideas to the radio station, which broadcasts at 91.7 fm

from the basement of Gurley Hall at University of New Mexico-Gallup. At the

same time, she's appreciative of the diverse programming that already

exists, courtesy of the station's loyal volunteers.

A veteran of radio theater from her home state of Kansas and from KUNM, Kaub

says she'd like to launch this concept on KGLP. An experienced grant writer,

she hopes to pursue some grants specifically to underwrite radio theater, as

well as technical improvements, local news and public affairs.

Also high on her to-do list is reviving youth radio, an effort that partnered

with UNM-Gallup's Communications program in the past.

She also believes the public radio station needs to be of better service to

the Native American community in which it is located, and says she intends to

explore ways of doing that, including better engagement with Native Youth.

Kaub has already turned her attention to public affairs programming on the

station on Fridays from 1 to 2 p.m. by interviewing mayoral and city council

candidates, and will continue to reserve this time for revolving hosts to

conduct local interviews.

Some technical issues are currently at the fore, including the replacement of

the emergency alert system, computers, and the upgrading of network decoders

for the satellite system.

"Equipment wears out, as do people," Kaub said.

She says she would also like to resurrect the online streaming of KGLP

programming, which was halted four years ago due to concerns over changes in

music licensing for online distribution. Further, she's keen to experiment

with podcasts and Smartphone listening.

Establishing local partnerships will figure highly in her goals as well.

Besides UNMG, she would like to explore partnerships with commercial firms and

non-profits, including Gallup's public and private schools, small

businesses, local government, and individual members of the Gallup community

willing to give their time or resources to the betterment of our city and the

surrounding area.

In addition to UNMG, current underwriters and partners include SCS Connect,

Coal Street Pub, the Navajo Nation Museum, Tsosie Photo, Makeshift Gallery,

and The Gallup Journey Magazine. Other organizations are now contemplating

partnerships or underwriting with KGLP.

Volunteers are always welcome, in capacities beyond just hosting a program.

Kaub says she welcomes volunteers who can learn to help how to operate the

equipment and help behind the scenes. Several volunteers, including some

KGLP show hosts, a UNMG retiree, and a UNMG C&J student are now training with

Kaub in audio production.

"I have trained a lot of people to do radio," Kaub said.

Kaub, who attended the University of Kansas, worked for nonprofits and

starting in 1988, for community radio station KKFI in Kansas City, a

100,000-Watt station, as one of its founders. She went on to work at

commercial radio stations in Kansas City, then with KRQE-TV in Albuquerque in

1997. During the time with KRQE-TV, she started volunteering for KUNM, until

she went to work for that station in 2002.

"There's tremendous potential at KGLP. We have a good existing infrastructure

at the station, and a vital community," Kaub says. "I'm excited by the

diversity - and, I feel accepted here."

KGLP's signal reaches all of Gallup and about 30 miles beyond in most

directions. For more information, go to manager@kglp.org or call
