Annisversary: surrender of Geronimo

Today in history: On Sept. 4, 1886, Apache Chief Geronimo and his band of Chiricahua renegades surrender to the U.S. Army at Skeleton Canyon in southwestern New Mexico on the Arizona border. Some historians say they were the last group of Indians to roam freely in the United States. De Lancey W. Gill took this portrait of Geronimo in 1905. Palace of the Governors Photo Archives 086991.
